論 迎 隨 explanation of rule of going against and following with flow,
補 瀉 之 法 supplementing and sedation
七 十 二 seventy second difficulty
難 曰 : of Nanjing explains
經 言 : treatise says
「 能 知 迎 隨 之 氣 ,one should know and follow direction of qi
可 令 調 之 ,so one can normalise it, tune it
調 氣之 方 ,direction of qi flow
必 在 陰 陽 。must be yin or yang
」 何 謂 也 ? what does it mean?
然 : explanation
所 謂 迎 隨 者 ,it is known to go against and go with flow
知 榮 衛之 流 行 ,direction of flow of Rong and Wei
經 脈 之 往 來 也 ,towards and backwards of how they flow in meridian
隨 其 逆 順 而 取 之 ,following means counter flow or with flow and aim
故 曰 迎 隨 。it is saying going against or with flow
調 氣 之 方 ,direction of qi flow
必 在 陰 陽 者 ,must be yin or yang
知 其 內 外 表 裏 , knowledge of inside and outside, external and internal
隨 其 陰 陽 而調 之 ,following yin and yang and harmonizing
故 曰 調 氣 之 方 ,way of normalizing of qi
必 在 陰 陽 。must be yin or yang.
To explain this difficulty we need to return to the first dificulty of Nanjing, explaining

Practitioner practicing archaic acupuncture observes fifty circulations in yin and yang meridians and 100 cuts of Rong and Wei circulation through the pulse as it explained in NanJing. Difficulty 72 explains exactly these qi movement trough in and yang meridians by Rong and Wei Qi. Practitioner also finds the dominating Qi as yin and yang victory through the pulse. It is the yin or yang Qi which practitioners applies on affected meridian.

Difficulty 72 explains exactly these qi movement trough in and yang meridians by Rong and Wei Qi. Practitioner also finds the dominating Qi as yin and yang victory through the pulse. It is the yin or yang Qi which practitioners applies on affected meridian.
Looking at pulse map which practitioners use to analyse pulse in archaic acupuncture we can see Lung Yin excess, yang deficiency, it is Rong excess, but Wei deficiency. Heart is yin deficiency, yang excess, it is Rong deficiency and Wei excess. Stomach is yang deficiency, yin excess, it is Rong deficiency and Wei excess. Gall Bladder is yang excess, yin deficiency, it is Rong excess, Wei deficiency.
Practitioner would treat patient with above mentioned pulse diagnosis following way:
During yin victory or yin dominating
1. Replete deficient Wei yin of Lung meridian during yin meridian activity on Wei side by directing dominating yin there
2. Replete deficient Rong yin of Heart meridian during yin meridian activity on Rong side by directing dominating yin there
3. Sedate excessive Wei yang of Stomach meridian during yang meridian activity on Wei side by directing dominating yin there
4. Sedate excessive Rong yang of Stomach meridian during yang meridian activity on Rong side by directing dominating yin there.
During yang victory or yang dominating
1. Sedate excessive Rong Yin of Lung meridian during yin meridian activity on Rong side by directing dominating yang there.
2. Sedate excessive Wei yin of Heart meridian during yin meridian activity on wei side by directing dominating yang there
3. Replete deficient Rong yang of Stomach meridian during yang meridian activity on rong side by directing dominating yang there
4. Replete deficient Wei yang of Gall Bladder meridian during yang meridian activity on wei side by directing dominating yang there.
Difficulty 72 explains movement of yin and yang during 50 periods of yin and yang meridian activity. It also explains movement of Rong and Wei Qi during 100 cuts. It also explains use of dominating yin and yang qi during yin and yang victories and treatment according to flow of Qi during these phenomena.
